The Buffalo Bills may have suffered an unfortunate early offseason setback involving one of the organization’s most intriguing developmental rookie defensive backs.
Toriano Pride Jr. had reportedly started generating strong internal buzz throughout the opening stretch of OTAs because of his elite speed, aggressive coverage style, and nonstop competitiveness during defensive drills.
According to reports surrounding Buffalo’s recent OTA practice sessions, seventh-round cornerback Toriano Pride Jr. recently suffered a moderate high-ankle sprain during on-field coverage drills.

While the injury is not currently considered season-threatening, league insiders now expect the rookie defender to miss the remainder of Buffalo’s offseason program while recovering over the next six to eight weeks.
The injury reportedly occurred during a sudden change-of-direction rep, where Pride Jr. awkwardly planted his lower leg while attempting to mirror a receiver before immediately stepping away from drills alongside medical personnel.
Several observers noted the rookie appeared visibly frustrated after what had reportedly been one of the strongest starts among Buffalo’s late-round defensive rookies.
The Bills selected Pride Jr. with the 220th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after an impressive collegiate journey that included stops at both Clemson and Missouri.
Although he initially played a rotational role at Clemson, his transfer to Missouri completely changed his trajectory.
During the 2025 season, Pride Jr. started 12 games while recording:
24 total tackles,
6 pass breakups,
2 interceptions,
and a defensive touchdown on a pick-six return.
At the NFL Combine, Pride Jr. also became one of the fastest defensive backs in the entire draft class after posting a blazing 4.32-second 40-yard dash.
That mark ranked as the second-fastest time among all defensive prospects participating in this year’s Combine.
Scouts consistently praised his burst, recovery speed, and competitiveness in man coverage situations.
Internally, Buffalo coaches reportedly viewed Pride Jr. as a potential slot cornerback option capable of contributing immediately on special teams while gradually earning a larger defensive role.
Now, however, much of that developmental momentum may temporarily pause while the rookie focuses on rehabilitation.
Fortunately for Buffalo, early medical evaluations reportedly confirmed the injury avoided major ligament damage or surgical concerns.
The expectation remains that Pride Jr. should have an opportunity to return sometime during training camp if recovery progresses positively.
Still, for a seventh-round rookie attempting to earn snaps inside one of the AFC’s deepest defensive back rooms, missing valuable offseason reps creates a difficult obstacle early in his NFL career.
One Bills coach reportedly told reporters:
“It’s definitely frustrating because he was having a really strong start to camp. Missing the offseason is tough for any young player, especially a rookie trying to earn trust and reps. But we believe in him, and we’re going to do everything possible to get him healthy and ready for preseason.”
And for Toriano Pride Jr., the next several weeks may now become critical in determining how quickly one of Buffalo’s fastest young defensive backs can resume climbing the depth chart entering the 2026 season.
