Buffalo, NY . Thursday Afternoon, May 2026
The Buffalo Bills reportedly entered the offseason hoping to reunite with veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson after his surprisingly strong impact late last season.
Instead, after negotiations quietly stalled behind the scenes, Buffalo appears to be moving in a different direction at linebacker entering OTAs.
According to league sources circulating Thursday afternoon, the Bills are expected to sign former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt to a one-year prove-it contract worth approximately $2.9 million annually.

The move comes after weeks of uncertainty surrounding Buffalo’s linebacker room following multiple offseason departures and growing concern about overall depth at the position.
Internally, the Bills reportedly explored bringing back Shaq Thompson after the veteran became an important contributor throughout the team’s 2025 playoff push.
Thompson delivered several strong performances late in the season, including a memorable playoff interception against Jacksonville during Buffalo’s Wild Card victory.
However, league insiders now believe contract expectations and defensive scheme preferences under new coordinator Jim Leonhard ultimately complicated a potential reunion.
That opened the door for Buffalo to aggressively pivot toward Pratt.
The veteran linebacker arrives with significant NFL experience after spending the majority of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals before later stints with the Raiders and Colts.
Last season, Pratt quietly produced one of the more underrated statistical years among available free-agent linebackers.
The veteran defender recorded:
126 total tackles
1 interception
10 pass breakups
while also maintaining one of the better missed tackle percentages among veteran linebackers across the league.
At 30 years old, Pratt may not carry the same name recognition as some bigger free-agent targets.
But Bills evaluators reportedly value:
his reliability
coverage discipline
veteran leadership
consistency against the run
as Buffalo attempts to stabilize the middle of the defense entering 2026.
The prove-it structure of the contract also gives Buffalo flexibility while allowing Pratt an opportunity to rebuild long-term value heading toward another free agency window next offseason.
Inside league circles, many believe Pratt could quickly emerge as one of the Bills’ most important under-the-radar additions if he adapts smoothly into Buffalo’s evolving defensive structure.
And after failing to finalize a reunion with Shaq Thompson, the Bills are now betting that Germaine Pratt can become the next veteran linebacker revival story in Buffalo.
