THE NFC IS ON NOTICE! 49ers Front Office Commits Grand Larceny — Steals Former No. 1 Overall Pick Who Dropped 8.5 Sacks in Just 13 Games as a Cowboy

San Francisco, CA – The San Francisco 49ers continue to flex their financial and strategic muscle in the post-free agency market, positioning themselves as one of the most formidable Super Bowl contenders in the NFC. After an already aggressive offseason that included marquee additions like star wide receiver Mike Evans and linebacker Dre Greenlaw, the 49ers have reportedly struck again—this time by securing veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney.

The move, described by some insiders as “grand larceny,” brings a proven, high-upside edge defender to a unit that already boasts elite talent but faced critical depth issues last season.

Insurance for a Star, Depth for a Champion

Fox Sports analyst Ben Arthur was among the first to spotlight the fit, strongly urging the 49ers to pursue Clowney. His reasoning is straightforward and compelling: San Francisco needed reliable insurance behind Nick Bosa, who is working his way back from a torn ACL that sidelined him for 14 games in 2025. Without their superstar edge rusher for much of the year, the 49ers’ pass rush visibly struggled.

At 33 years old, Clowney—the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft—has defied typical career arcs for edge rushers. He has recorded at least 8.5 sacks in two of his past three seasons, proving he still possesses the burst, power, and football IQ to impact games at a high level. After beginning the 2025 season with the Dallas Cowboys—following their blockbuster trade of Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers—Clowney delivered exactly what was asked of him.

In just 13 games, he tallied 41 total tackles, 8.5 sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and four passes defended. His production provided immediate relief to a depleted Dallas edge group and showcased the kind of veteran reliability that contenders crave.

An Already Elite Defense Gets Deeper

With Clowney now in the fold, the 49ers’ defensive outlook becomes even more intimidating. Nick Bosa remains one of the league’s premier pass rushers when healthy, while Fred Warner continues to anchor the linebacker corps as one of the NFL’s best. The secondary carries some lingering questions, but the overall playmaking potential across the unit is substantial.

The primary concern heading into the season was depth, particularly along the defensive line. Injuries exposed that vulnerability in 2025. Adding a player of Clowney’s caliber directly addresses that issue. He is more than capable of stepping into a starting role if needed, yet his presence as a rotational and situational weapon provides exactly the kind of insurance the 49ers lacked last year.

John Lynch and the front office deserve significant credit. Their willingness to remain active even after a productive early offseason demonstrates a commitment to leaving no stone unturned in pursuit of another championship. While younger, flashier options often dominate headlines, signing a battle-tested veteran like Clowney reflects smart, championship-oriented roster building.

A Statement to the Conference

The NFC has been put on notice. Between the offensive firepower added through Evans, the linebacker reinforcement with Greenlaw, and now a proven pass-rush specialist in Clowney, the 49ers are constructing a roster built for deep playoff runs.

Only time will tell how the pieces fully integrate and whether health cooperates, but on paper, San Francisco has assembled one of the most complete and balanced teams in the conference. For opposing offenses, facing a front seven that now includes Bosa, Warner, and Clowney is a daunting proposition.

The 49ers aren’t just contenders—they’re loading up like a team that refuses to settle for anything less than another Lombardi Trophy.
