Detroit, MI . May 2026
The Detroit Lions may have suffered an unfortunate early offseason setback involving one of the organization’s most intriguing young defensive rookies.
Tyre West had quietly started generating positive internal buzz during rookie minicamp because of his versatility, physicality, and ability to line up across multiple defensive positions.
According to reports surrounding rookie minicamp, seventh-round defensive lineman Tyre West recently suffered a moderate high-ankle sprain during on-field drills just days before the start of organized team activities.
While the injury is not currently considered long-term or season-threatening, league insiders believe West is expected to miss approximately six to eight weeks of football activity.
That timeline would likely force the rookie defender to miss the majority, if not all, of Detroit’s offseason program entering training camp.
The injury reportedly occurred during a lateral movement rep involving pass-rush drills, where West awkwardly planted his lower leg before immediately leaving the field alongside trainers.
Several observers noted the rookie appeared frustrated after what had reportedly been a strong early start to minicamp practices.
The former Tennessee standout was selected with the 222nd overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after recording:
65 career tackles,
20.5 tackles for loss,
and 10 sacks during his collegiate career.
At roughly 278 pounds, West was viewed internally as a developmental rotational defender capable of lining up both outside and inside along the defensive line.
According to multiple reports, Detroit’s coaching staff had been especially interested in evaluating how quickly West could adapt to hybrid responsibilities within the defensive structure entering OTAs.
Now, much of that developmental process will temporarily pause while the rookie focuses on rehabilitation.
Fortunately for Detroit, medical evaluations reportedly confirmed the injury avoided significant ligament damage or surgical concerns.
The expectation remains that West should be fully available by some point during training camp if recovery continues progressing positively.
Still, missing valuable offseason reps represents a difficult setback for any late-round rookie attempting to climb a competitive NFL depth chart.
And for Tyre West, the next two months may now become just as important mentally as they are physically.
