While I don’t necessarily agree that the Boston Red Sox should be buyers at the trade deadline, it’s also important to remember that teams can buy for years after this. Let’s say somebody like Ketel Marte becomes available from the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Red Sox want him. To say the Red Sox shouldn’t go after him would be a bit unfair because he’d be on the team much longer than just the next few months.
Despite the Red Sox not competing over the next few months, if everything goes as it has the first few months of this season, that doesn’t mean Marte can’t make a major impact for them in the future, and that’s exactly why they would go out and add a player of his caliber.
According to one writer, Marte would actually be the dream target, and I think it’s tough to argue against.
“The song remains the same in Boston, even after the Red Wedding: Where will the offense come from? Boston ranks either dead last or close to it in every meaningful power category this season, and the picture is even bleaker in the infield, where Caleb Durbin and Marcelo Mayer have been busts so far and Trevor Story has regressed after 2025’s bounce-back year.
“Someone like Ketel Marte would be the dream scenario, but whoever the target, Craig Breslow needs to find someone who can hit the ball over the fence in 2027 and beyond,” Chris Landers wrote.
The best thing about Marte is that, while he isn’t a great defender, he can play multiple positions.
The Red Sox would probably be best putting him at second base, but if they needed him to play the outfield a bit, move over to third, or figure something else out, he has the ability to do so.
Offensively speaking, there aren’t many better in baseball, especially up the middle. He’s the most intriguing target Boston could go after if it wants to buy at this deadline.
