Twins Need Taj Bradley to Regain Ace Form as Minnesota Fights to Stay in AL Wild Card Race

Despite sitting seven games below .500, the Minnesota Twins remain firmly in the American League playoff picture.

Thanks to a crowded AL Wild Card race, Minnesota finds itself just three games behind the final postseason spot, keeping hopes alive for what would be an unlikely turnaround.

One of the biggest reasons the Twins have managed to stay competitive this season has been the emergence of right-hander Taj Bradley.

Acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for reliever Griffin Jax last summer, Bradley quickly established himself as one of the most important pieces of Minnesota’s rotation. Before suffering an injury in early May, the 24-year-old was arguably the Twins’ best starting pitcher.

Now, however, some recent struggles have raised concerns at a critical point in the season.

Taj Bradley Was Dominating Before Injury

Prior to landing on the injured list with right pectoralis muscle inflammation on May 9, Bradley had been outstanding.

Across eight starts and 47 innings, the former Rays starter posted a stellar 2.87 ERA while showcasing the strikeout ability that made him one of baseball’s top young pitchers.

Bradley recorded a 26.1% strikeout rate while maintaining a solid 8.5% walk rate, consistently giving Minnesota quality outings and helping stabilize the rotation.

His success immediately validated the Twins’ decision to acquire him from Tampa Bay.

At the time of his injury, Bradley looked capable of developing into the ace Minnesota desperately needed.

Strong Return Followed by Back-to-Back Difficult Starts

Bradley’s first outing after returning from the injured list provided plenty of optimism.

Facing the Boston Red Sox on May 23, he allowed just one run over five innings while striking out seven batters. He surrendered only three hits and appeared to have regained his rhythm quickly.

However, the momentum did not continue.

In his next two starts, Bradley allowed four earned runs in each appearance.

Against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 29, he struggled with command and traffic on the bases, giving up five hits and two walks.

Things became even more concerning during his most recent outing against the Chicago White Sox, when he allowed seven hits and five walks while once again surrendering four runs.

Suddenly, questions have begun to emerge.

Is Bradley simply shaking off rust after his injury?

Or are the Twins witnessing another example of the inconsistency that has occasionally followed him throughout his career?

Bradley’s History Suggests Inconsistency Is Possible

The encouraging news for Minnesota is that returning pitchers often need time to rediscover their rhythm after spending weeks on the injured list.

Command and timing frequently take time to return, especially for young starters.

Yet Bradley’s track record suggests another possibility.

During the 2024 season, the talented right-hander experienced one of the most dramatic swings of performance in baseball.

Between June 8 and July 25 of that year, Bradley dominated opposing hitters. Over a nine-start stretch, he posted an incredible 0.82 ERA while striking out more than 30 percent of the batters he faced.

For nearly two months, he looked like one of the best pitchers in the sport.

But the second half of the season told a different story.

Over his final 11 starts, Bradley recorded a 6.51 ERA and saw his strikeout numbers decline significantly.

Those dramatic fluctuations created questions about whether consistency would ultimately become his greatest challenge.

Now, after another brilliant stretch followed by recent struggles, some observers wonder whether history could be repeating itself in 2026.

Twins Need Bradley at His Best

For Minnesota, the timing of Bradley’s struggles is far from ideal.

The Twins have fought through injuries and inconsistent performances all season, yet they have somehow remained within striking distance of a Wild Card berth.

Their margin for error, however, is extremely small.

If Minnesota hopes to make a surprise postseason push, Bradley must once again become one of the rotation’s anchors.

The Twins simply cannot afford prolonged struggles from one of their most talented starters.

When Bradley is pitching well, he has shown the ability to dominate lineups with a combination of velocity, swing-and-miss stuff, and strikeout potential.

Those qualities are difficult to replace.

Upcoming Start Could Reveal a Lot

Bradley’s upcoming start against the Detroit Tigers could provide an important answer.

A strong outing would reinforce the belief that his recent struggles are simply the result of returning from injury and that his ace-level form will soon return.

Another disappointing performance, however, could intensify concerns regarding his long-term consistency.

For Minnesota, every game matters.

Being seven games under .500 would normally place a team far outside the playoff conversation, but the American League race has kept the Twins alive.

Because of that, Bradley’s performance over the next several weeks may ultimately determine whether Minnesota can continue chasing October baseball.

Taj Bradley Remains One of Minnesota’s Most Important Players

Even with his recent struggles, Bradley’s overall body of work this season has been impressive.

His strong start before the injury helped keep the Twins competitive during difficult stretches, and his upside remains enormous.

The organization still views him as a key piece of its future.

Now the challenge becomes finding consistency.

If Bradley can rediscover the form that made him one of the American League’s most effective starters earlier this season, Minnesota’s playoff hopes could remain very much alive.

But if the inconsistency that has followed him throughout parts of his career resurfaces once again, the Twins may find themselves running out of time.

For a team still clinging to postseason aspirations, Taj Bradley’s next few starts could prove to be among the most important of the entire season.
