The Dallas Cowboys possess one of the most talented wide receiver rooms in the NFL and arguably the strongest unit in the NFC East. Yet despite the star power at the position, difficult decisions loom on the horizon.
ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes the Cowboys will ultimately part ways with one of their top receivers at the end of the 2026 season. In a pointed segment on Get Up, Orlovsky forecasted that the team will not retain both George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb long-term, setting the stage for a potentially seismic trade this offseason.
“They’re not keeping both of them,” Orlovsky said. “So it’s going to be signing George Pickens to a long-term deal that they’ve been hesitant to do, or CeeDee Lamb’s going to be traded.”
Lamb, a five-time Pro Bowler who has earned a reported $136 million contract extension in recent years, stands as the player most likely to be moved according to Orlovsky’s analysis. While both receivers are elite talents, the analyst highlighted Lamb’s edge in reliability and personality as a counterbalance to lingering maturity questions surrounding Pickens.
Last season, Pickens led the Cowboys with 93 receptions for 1,429 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Lamb finished second on the team with 75 catches for 1,077 yards and three scores. Their combined production gave Dallas one of the most dynamic passing attacks in the league, but the front office appears unwilling or unable to commit to both players beyond the upcoming campaign.
A Star Receiver with an Impressive Legacy
Selected 17th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma, CeeDee Lamb has delivered far more highlights than setbacks during his career in Dallas. In 95 games, he has tallied 571 receptions for 7,416 yards and 41 touchdowns. His résumé includes five Pro Bowl nods, two second-team All-Pro selections, and one first-team All-Pro honor. Lamb even led the entire NFL in receptions during the 2023-24 season.
Despite his on-field excellence, Lamb has drawn criticism for occasional lapses in focus. He recorded 11 drops in 2024-25 and eight more last season, earning an unflattering “butter-fingers” reputation in some circles. Those concerns, paired with the team’s clear desire to secure Pickens long-term, could make Lamb the odd man out.
Pickens’ Rapid Impact and the Maturity Question
George Pickens joined the Cowboys via trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers and wasted little time making his presence felt. His 2025-26 campaign was nothing short of dominant, establishing him as the team’s clear alpha receiver. However, Orlovsky noted that questions remain about Pickens’ maturity and consistency over the long haul.
For Pickens to cement his future in Dallas, another high-level season in 2026 will be essential. If he delivers, the Cowboys appear poised to invest heavily in him, potentially forcing them to part ways with Lamb in a blockbuster trade.
High Stakes for Both Stars
The situation leaves both receivers facing significant pressure entering the new season. For Lamb, it’s a chance to silence doubters and remind the league why he remains one of the most complete wideouts in football. For Pickens, it’s an opportunity to prove he can be the long-term cornerstone the Cowboys crave.
As Orlovsky emphasized, the organization simply cannot keep both.
While the dynamic duo’s partnership has thrilled fans, the financial and roster realities of the NFL often demand tough choices. A Lamb trade would send shockwaves through the league, potentially reshaping both the Cowboys’ offense and the market for elite pass-catchers.
For now, all eyes turn to the 2026 season—one that could determine which star continues wearing the star on his helmet and which begins a new chapter elsewhere. In Big D, change may be coming, and it could cut deep.
