New England Patriots Eye Maxx Crosby Trade as Edge Rusher Emerges as Top Priority After A.J. Brown Acquisition

After spending much of the offseason focused on landing superstar wide receiver A.J. Brown, the New England Patriots are now expected to shift their attention toward another major roster need: finding an elite edge rusher.
The Patriots made headlines by adding Brown to give franchise quarterback Drake Maye a true No. 1 receiving option. However, despite the excitement surrounding the blockbuster move, many analysts believe New England’s pass rush remains one of the team’s biggest weaknesses heading into the 2026 NFL season.
One name that continues to surface in trade speculation is Las Vegas Raiders star pass rusher Maxx Crosby. While acquiring Crosby would likely require a significant investment, the Patriots have emerged as one of several teams being linked to a potential deal if the Raiders ultimately decide to move their defensive cornerstone.
Patriots Could Enter Maxx Crosby Sweepstakes
According to ESPN insider Dan Graziano, the possibility of a Maxx Crosby trade remains very much alive, although it may not happen until later in the season.
The Patriots have been mentioned alongside several contenders, including the Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys, and Chicago Bears, as teams that could pursue Crosby if they find themselves in playoff contention and in need of a game-changing pass rusher.
Graziano recently explained that Crosby’s health situation remains the biggest obstacle to any immediate trade discussions.
“I wouldn’t expect Crosby trade talk to heat up again until he gets on a field and shows he’s healthy,” Graziano noted. “If a team such as the Cowboys, Bills, Bears or Patriots finds itself in contention and in need of an impact pass rusher, things could get interesting again before the trade deadline.”
That timeline makes sense given the uncertainty surrounding Crosby’s recovery from a knee injury that significantly impacted his trade value earlier this offseason.
Maxx Crosby Remains One of the NFL’s Elite Pass Rushers
Even with concerns surrounding his health, there is little debate about Crosby’s production when healthy.
The two-time All-Pro has established himself as one of the most disruptive defensive players in football since entering the league. Over seven NFL seasons, Crosby has accumulated 69.5 sacks, averaging approximately 10.7 sacks per 17 games.
His impact extends far beyond sack totals. Crosby has recorded 133 tackles for loss, consistently disrupting opposing offenses and creating negative plays. He has also forced 11 fumbles during his career, demonstrating his ability to change games with splash plays.
Last season, Crosby finished with 10 sacks despite dealing with injuries that limited his effectiveness at various points throughout the year.
For a Patriots defense looking to improve its pass rush and generate more pressure on opposing quarterbacks, Crosby would instantly become one of the most impactful defensive additions available.
Raiders Already Came Close to Trading Crosby
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the situation is that the Raiders reportedly already attempted to trade Crosby earlier this offseason.
According to reports, Las Vegas had reached an agreement in principle with the Baltimore Ravens that would have sent Crosby to Baltimore in exchange for two first-round draft picks. However, the deal ultimately collapsed after concerns emerged during the medical evaluation process.
The primary concern centered around Crosby’s surgically repaired left knee, which reportedly raised enough red flags to cause the Ravens to walk away from the agreement.
That failed trade explains why many league insiders believe any future deal involving Crosby will likely occur closer to the trade deadline rather than during the offseason. Teams will want to see him return to the field and demonstrate that he has fully recovered before committing premium draft capital.
While Crosby is still considered an elite talent, his age is becoming a factor as well. The veteran pass rusher turns 29 years old in August, meaning any acquiring team would need to weigh both his immediate impact and long-term value.
Raiders’ Asking Price Could Be a Major Challenge

One of the biggest obstacles standing between Crosby and New England may be Las Vegas’ steep asking price.
The Raiders reportedly continue to seek a package comparable to the one they nearly received from Baltimore. Multiple reports suggest the organization is looking for at least two first-round picks in exchange for Crosby.
There were also rumors that the Cincinnati Bengals previously offered the No. 10 overall pick in the NFL Draft, but Las Vegas still wanted additional compensation beyond a single first-round selection.
That valuation could make negotiations extremely difficult for the Patriots.
New England recently sacrificed significant draft capital to acquire A.J. Brown, including a future first-round pick sent to the Philadelphia Eagles. As a result, the Patriots may not possess the flexibility necessary to meet the Raiders’ demands without further depleting their future assets.
General manager Eliot Wolf and head coach Mike Vrabel must carefully balance short-term roster improvements with long-term team building around Drake Maye.
Patriots Also Exploring Other Edge Rusher Options
While Crosby remains the biggest name linked to New England, he is far from the only pass rusher the Patriots are monitoring.
Another player generating speculation is New York Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Like Crosby, Thibodeaux was recently mentioned by Graziano as a potential trade candidate who could fit New England’s needs. The connection is particularly interesting because former Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen is now part of Mike Vrabel’s coaching staff with the Patriots.
That familiarity could provide New England with valuable insight into Thibodeaux’s strengths, weaknesses, and long-term potential.
At just 25 years old, Thibodeaux offers a much younger alternative to Crosby. The former first-round pick has flashed elite pass-rushing ability throughout his career but has struggled with consistency and injuries.
Reports indicate the Giants may be hesitant to offer him a long-term extension beyond the 2026 season, creating the possibility that New York could eventually entertain trade discussions.
Unlike Crosby, acquiring Thibodeaux would likely require significantly less draft compensation, making him a more realistic target for a Patriots team that has already invested heavily in its offense.
Patriots’ Next Major Move Could Come on Defense
Following the blockbuster acquisition of A.J. Brown, the Patriots have clearly entered a new phase of roster building centered around maximizing Drake Maye’s development and accelerating the team’s return to playoff contention.
While improving the offense was the organization’s top offseason priority, strengthening the pass rush may now represent the next major step.
Whether the Patriots ultimately pursue Maxx Crosby, Kayvon Thibodeaux, or another edge rusher entirely, one thing appears increasingly clear: New England’s front office is not finished reshaping the roster.
As training camp approaches and the trade deadline looms later in the season, the Patriots could once again find themselves at the center of some of the NFL’s biggest trade conversations.
