The Houston Astros received a clearer Hunter Brown injury update Saturday, and his next step suggests a return could be near. The Astros right-hander now has a defined rehab start with Triple-A Sugar Land before a possible major league activation.
Brown has been working back from a Grade 2 right shoulder strain that interrupted his season after a strong opening start. He last pitched for the Astros on March 31, allowing one run over six innings with eight strikeouts vs. the Boston Red Sox.
The setback eventually moved Brown from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. Now, Houston’s rotation could be nearing a much-needed boost as the club tries to regain traction in the AL West.
MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart shared the update Saturday on X, formerly Twitter, giving the Astros a clearer rehab timeline and outlining Brown’s possible path back to the major league rotation.
“Hunter Brown’s next start will come at Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday. That would put him in line to come off the injured list against the Tigers at Daikin Park the following week.”

This medical timeline gives the Astros a concrete plan instead of a vague rehab marker. A start Wednesday with Sugar Land would allow Brown to test his shoulder in game action before returning to a major league mound.
His absence has forced the club to lean harder on its remaining starters and bullpen, so even a carefully managed return would quickly change the staff’s outlook.
Houston enters Saturday’s action with a record of 29-36, sitting fourth in the AL West and 7.5 games out of first place. The Astros have gone 5-5 over their last 10 games and were looking to take the second game of a three-game set with the Athletics after winning Friday night’s opener, 5-1.
The flamethrower’s return would not solve everything by itself, but it would restore a legitimate top-end arm to the rotation. For the Astros, Wednesday’s rehab start could become the final checkpoint before a meaningful mid-June return.
