“💥 TRADE BOMBSHELL IN KANSAS CITY! Chiefs Are LOCKING UP a 3-Time All-Pro Caliber Tight End — The 25-Year-Old Beast Poised to Replace Travis Kelce and Become the Next Dominant Force… The Rest of the AFC Has NO ANSWER!”

As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for what could be the final chapter of the Travis Kelce era, the organization is already eyeing its future at the tight end position. While the future Hall of Famer returns for a 14th NFL season in 2026, the consensus around the league is that this will likely be his last. With Kelce’s decorated career winding down, the Chiefs must find a worthy successor to maintain their offensive dominance alongside Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid.

Enter a bold trade proposal from Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay that could reshape the Chiefs’ roster for years to come: Kansas City sending a first-round and a third-round pick in next year’s draft to the Detroit Lions in exchange for tight end Sam LaPorta.

The LaPorta Proposition

LaPorta exploded onto the scene with a sensational rookie campaign three years ago, hauling in 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. His immediate impact as a pass-catching threat and reliable blocker made him one of the most promising young tight ends in the league. Although his production has tapered off in subsequent seasons, the talent remains undeniable when healthy.

The timing is intriguing. LaPorta is entering the final year of his rookie contract, set to earn a modest $5.8 million in 2026. Despite his contributions, the Lions have yet to reach a long-term extension with the 25-year-old standout. Compounding the situation is LaPorta’s recent injury history—he missed nearly half of the 2025 season with a back issue after appearing in nearly every game during his first two years.

For the Lions, trading LaPorta now could allow them to recoup significant draft capital while addressing other roster needs. For the Chiefs, it represents a proactive strike to secure the next franchise tight end.

A Seamless Fit in Kansas City

The appeal of LaPorta to Kansas City is clear. He would immediately slot in as Kelce’s heir apparent, spending the 2026 season learning directly from one of the greatest to ever play the position. Under the tutelage of Kelce, Mahomes, and Reid, LaPorta could refine his game in one of the NFL’s most dynamic offenses before assuming a lead role in 2027 and beyond.

“LaPorta would immediately slot in as Travis Kelce’s much-needed heir, working alongside the aging tight end in 2026 and taking over as one of the primary receiving threats in Kansas City’s dynamic offense once the future Hall of Famer hangs up his cleats,” Kay noted in his analysis.

Imagine LaPorta operating in Reid’s creative scheme with Mahomes delivering pinpoint passes. The 25-year-old’s combination of size, athleticism, and football IQ would give the Chiefs a versatile weapon capable of stretching the field, winning in the red zone, and contributing in the run game—skills that have defined Kelce’s dominance for over a decade.

Risk Versus Reward

Of course, any deal involving a first- and third-round pick carries risk, especially for a player dealing with health questions. LaPorta was limited in 2025, and the Chiefs would be betting that his earlier production was no fluke and that he can stay durable moving forward.

Yet the potential reward is massive. Acquiring a young, proven talent on a team-friendly deal for one more year provides immense value. If LaPorta returns to his rookie form—or even approaches it—he could anchor the Chiefs’ offense for the next decade, ensuring the Mahomes-led attack remains a nightmare for AFC defenses.

General manager Brett Veach has built a reputation for savvy moves that keep the Chiefs in Super Bowl contention. While trading significant draft capital during a Super Bowl window isn’t typical, the opportunity to lock up a difference-making tight end while Kelce is still present for mentorship could be too compelling to ignore.

The AFC Landscape

Should this deal materialize, the rest of the AFC would face yet another headache. The Chiefs have already proven nearly unstoppable with Kelce. Adding a 25-year-old All-Pro caliber talent to the mix would further solidify Kansas City as the team to beat, extending their dynasty well into the late 2020s and early 2030s.

It’s still early, and the Chiefs may choose to ride with Kelce in 2026 before making major moves at the position. But as Kay suggests, why not dream big? A LaPorta acquisition would inject fresh excitement into an already star-studded roster and provide a smooth transition from one generation of elite tight end play to the next.

Make it happen, Brett Veach. Chiefs Kingdom would love to see Sam LaPorta catching touchdowns from Patrick Mahomes for years to come.
