📌REPORT: The Lakers are reportedly exploring a blockbuster move that would pair Luka Doncic with a $126 million Boston Celtics star, potentially creating one of the NBA’s most dangerous duos. If the proposal gains traction, Los Angeles could dramatically reshape the balance of power in the Western Conference. 👀

Lakers' Major Trade Proposal Pairs $126 Million Celtics Star With Luka Doncic

Los Angeles Lakers Eye Derrick White Trade to Build Championship Core Around Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to be among the NBA’s most aggressive teams during the 2026 offseason. With franchise superstar Luka Doncic firmly established as the centerpiece of the organization, every move made by the front office will be focused on maximizing the team’s championship window.

While several rumors continue to circulate around the league, one proposed trade involving the Boston Celtics could dramatically reshape both franchises and elevate the Lakers back into serious title contention.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Matt Brandon, Los Angeles could pursue veteran guard Derrick White in a blockbuster deal designed to provide Luka Doncic with the ideal supporting cast.

Proposed Lakers-Celtics Trade Package

In the proposed scenario, the Lakers would acquire:

  • Derrick White
  • Center Neemias Queta
  • Young wing Jordan Walsh

Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics would receive:

Advertisements
  • Rui Hachimura
  • Dalton Knecht
  • Maxi Kleber
  • The Lakers’ 2030 first-round pick
  • The Lakers’ 2031 first-round pick

Although the trade would require Los Angeles to sacrifice future assets, the move would immediately address one of the team’s biggest weaknesses—perimeter defense.

Adding White would give the Lakers a proven two-way player with championship experience, while Queta and Walsh would provide valuable depth at affordable salaries.

Why Derrick White Is an Ideal Fit Next to Luka Doncic

Lakers Bold Trade Proposal Lands $160 Million Forward Next to Luka Doncic

Since acquiring Luka Doncic, the Lakers have prioritized finding players who can complement his offensive brilliance without requiring the ball in their hands.

Derrick White fits that description perfectly.

At 31 years old, White remains one of the NBA’s most underrated guards. His ability to defend multiple positions, knock down three-point shots, and make winning plays has been instrumental to Boston’s success over recent seasons.

More importantly, White’s defensive presence could help compensate for some of Doncic’s shortcomings on that end of the floor.

Matt Brandon explained why the fit makes so much sense:

“For L.A., this deal is about maximizing their win-now window with LeBron James and Luka Doncic. White’s elite perimeter defense and off-ball shooting make him the ideal backcourt complement to Doncic, who thrives with secondary playmakers that don’t need the ball to impact the game.”

White’s versatility would allow the Lakers to establish a true two-way identity—something they lacked throughout much of last season.

Salary Matching Makes the Trade Possible

Financial considerations are always a major factor in blockbuster trades, and this deal would require careful salary matching.

White is currently playing under a four-year, $118 million contract extension with Boston that runs through the 2028-29 season. He is scheduled to earn approximately $28 million next season before seeing that number increase to around $30 million the following year.

Fortunately for Los Angeles, the combined salaries of Rui Hachimura, Dalton Knecht, and Maxi Kleber would create enough flexibility to absorb White’s contract.

Another factor that could influence the Lakers’ financial strategy is the uncertain future of LeBron James. Questions surrounding his free agency status continue to linger, and any decision he makes could affect the organization’s long-term payroll structure.

Austin Reaves also remains an interesting variable.

Because Reaves is due for a new contract extension, some analysts have suggested that he could become part of trade discussions. However, many within the organization reportedly view him as a key member of the team’s future.

“If the Lakers can acquire Derrick White without giving up Austin Reaves, that’s a massive win,” Brandon noted.

Keeping Reaves alongside Doncic and White would preserve much of the team’s offensive firepower while simultaneously improving its defense.

Lakers Need Defensive Reinforcements After Last Season’s Problems

Despite Luka Doncic’s arrival, the Lakers struggled defensively throughout the 2025-26 campaign.

Too often, the team relied on spectacular offensive performances from Doncic to overcome defensive shortcomings. That strategy proved unsustainable, particularly when injuries became a factor.

When the Slovenian superstar suffered a hamstring injury late in the season, the Lakers’ championship hopes quickly began to fade.

Although Los Angeles managed to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs, they ultimately lacked the defensive consistency and depth required to compete with elite teams in the Western Conference.

Against younger and more physical opponents, the Lakers simply could not sustain their momentum.

The front office clearly understands that surrounding Doncic with defensive-minded veterans is essential if the franchise hopes to compete with rising powers such as the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.

Future Versus Immediate Contention

Parting with promising young players like Dalton Knecht and valuable future first-round picks would not be an easy decision.

Knecht still possesses significant upside, while Rui Hachimura remains an important contributor.

However, the Lakers are operating with a sense of urgency.

With Luka Doncic entering the prime years of his career and LeBron James potentially nearing the end of his legendary run, Los Angeles appears committed to winning now rather than waiting for long-term development.

Acquiring Derrick White would send a clear message to the rest of the NBA:

The Lakers are all-in on competing for a championship.

Whether Boston would ultimately agree to such a package remains uncertain, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear.

As long as Luka Doncic is wearing purple and gold, the Lakers will continue searching for every possible move that can transform them from playoff participants into legitimate NBA title contenders.
