Coming off of a series loss to the Minnesota Twins, the Houston Astros are gearing up for a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs. Before first pitch, the Astros shook up their roster.

Houston optioned right-handed pitcher Jayden Murray to Triple-A, the team announced. Furthermore, fellow right hander Cody Bolton, who had been designated for assignment, cleared waivers and will also report to Triple-A.

In the Astros’ announcement, they stated they’ll name the corresponding move for Murray’s demotion prior to Friday’s Cubs opener. While it hasn’t been announced officially, top prospect Alimber Santa is expected to be called up, via MLB insider Hector Gomez.

Murray has appeared in seven games for the Astros in 2026, but the results haven’t been pretty. The right-hander holds a 7.15 ERA and a 5/7 K/BB ratio. Murray has been much better in Triple-A, where he holds a 1.00 ERA and a 10/4 K/BB ratio over his eight 2026 appearances. Perhaps with some extra minor league seasoning, Houston gives him another shot at the major league level.

Assuming Santa is the corresponding move, they’ll be optimistic that their No. 16 overall prospect, via MLB Pipeline, can provide a spark. It may not be Christmas, but Houston is certainly looking for some magic to turn things around. They’re entering the Cubs series with a 20-31 record, six games back of the Athletics in the AL West.

The struggles haven’t all been Houston’s fault, as they have been bitten hard by the injury bug. But if the Astros can’t find their stride sooner rather than later, manager Joe Espada’s seat will only get hotter.
