The Rams once again sent away premium draft capital to land a star player. After adding Myles Garrett, a pass rusher could see his future snaps come elsewhere. Do the Chiefs make sense for someone like Byron Young?

The Los Angeles Rams sent shockwaves throughout the NFL to open June. Trading for star pass rusher Myles Garrett serves as another example of how the Rams are all in for 2026. It also adds to their history of sending away premium draft capital to make moves that they hope puts them over the top.
Because Garrett is now entrenched for the foreseeable future, that leads to questions about the future of other Rams’ defenders. Do they have to let younger pieces walk? The salary cap gymnastics may be too much to keep some pieces around. One of those is pass rusher Byron Young.
The Kansas City Chiefs should be one of the teams looking to land Young. He is someone who offers juice when chasing after the quarterback. Young’s high volume of pressures presents a player profile that any team should be after.
Players like Young would complete largely new defensive end room for K.C.
Kansas City has to get back to being a more effective pass rush in 2026. They made significant additions to the defensive line for this upcoming season. Even if they do not trade for Young now before the regular season, he is a free agent next offseason.
The Chiefs can hope to see a rebound from their pressure packages this season. And if they are back contending as expected, Young is certainly a name that makes sense to perhaps fix one last missing link. Young being an idea with George Karlaftis, R Mason Thomas, and Ashton Gillotte in the defensive end room only creates more opportunities for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to play with.
Chiefs already chased different molds on defense this offseason
You may say Kansas City has typically not gone after the bendy, outside linebacker types like Young. Though, the kind of defenders they brought in this offseason was a deviation from their norm in defensive roster building.
Thomas comes in as the outlier style of pass rusher this defense desperately needed. The hope is he will add vigor as a rookie inside of a group that became stagnant last season. Even in the secondary, Alohi Gilman and Kader Kohou are not as hefty of defenders as what K.C. has utilized in the past. But they can make up for it in more ways than one.
Young not being a bulking pass rusher only helps the chances that the Chiefs may chase him. At this point, Kansas City has to find a way to alter their makeup on defense. The results are not going to be perfect. But with some changes to how the car is built, the engine can get back to a place of restoration. Young would accentuate that line of thinking perfectly with his play style.
Landing Young would be well worth the price
Outlets are projecting Young to receive over $100 million in total value on his deal next offseason. If he reaches free agency, Kansas City would have to pay a pretty penny to beat out other teams for his services. But if there is any Rams player who could be free after the Garrett acquisition, Young would boost the Chiefs in a multitude of areas.
Kansas City is going to have to continue to reshape the defensive line as Chris Jones wraps up his career. Stacking up the defensive end spot is the best way to counteract the end of Jones’ run. Young could be a dream addition if the Chiefs were to strike.
