Rangers Eye Trade That Fixes Two Big Issues

The Texas Rangers are on a mission to revamp their offensive strategy, and they’re doing it on two fronts. They’ve been active in the free-agent market, bringing in talent like Brandon Nimmo.

But that’s not all. They’re also focusing on transforming current players, such as Josh Jung and Ezequiel Duran, into on-base machines.

The goal is clear: increase on-base percentage, create more base traffic, and ultimately, generate more scoring opportunities.

The past couple of seasons have been a learning curve for the Rangers. They’ve realized that relying solely on power hitting isn’t enough to secure victories.

Instead, they’re shifting gears to diversify their offensive approach. Chris Young, the team’s president of baseball operations, is spearheading this change by prioritizing players who can reach base in various ways.

So, how’s this new strategy panning out? After two months into the season, the Rangers’ on-base percentage stands at .316, a noticeable improvement from last year’s .302.

While this is a step in the right direction, Texas still finds itself ranked 21st in this category as they head into a matchup with the Cleveland Guardians. There’s room for growth.

Enter Jeff Passan from ESPN, who recently highlighted a potential trade target for every team as the deadline approaches. For the Rangers, he pointed to San Francisco Giants second baseman Luis Arraez as a game-changer.

Why? Arraez is a contact-hitting maestro, perfectly aligning with the Rangers’ new vision of consistent on-base threats.

In 60 games with the Giants, he’s posted a .325/.364/.436 slash line, with two homers and 24 RBIs. His .364 on-base percentage would be among the best of his career if he keeps it up.

Comparatively, the Rangers’ top on-base performer, Josh Jung, boasts a .363 OBP, yet he’s never surpassed .315 in a full season. Arraez’s ability to get on base isn’t just about drawing walks; it’s about minimizing strikeouts.

This season, he’s struck out just 11 times while walking 15 times, a testament to his disciplined approach at the plate. In fact, he’s never struck out more than 48 times in a single season, and there have been years when his walk total exceeded his strikeouts.

Contrast that with the Rangers, who have 15 players with more strikeouts than Arraez, including injured stars Wyatt Langford and Corey Seager. Adding Arraez to the lineup could significantly enhance Texas’s on-base opportunities.

Financially, Arraez is an attractive option. He’s on a one-year, $12 million deal, making him a relatively affordable acquisition at the trade deadline. With no commitments beyond 2026 and his ability to play multiple positions, Arraez could be the perfect fit for a Rangers team looking to contend and boost their on-base prowess.
