From the moment Brock Purdy took the field against the Miami Dolphins back in 2022, he showed a knack for building quick connections with his receivers. Fast forward to today, and it seems like he’s working his magic again-this time with the 49ers’ new wide receiver, Mike Evans.
The 49ers snagged Evans on a three-year, $42.5 million deal during free agency, banking on him to bounce back after a 2025 season that was marred by injuries. Evans, a six-time Pro Bowler, has been a model of consistency throughout his career, boasting 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons before last year’s setback when he was limited to just eight games.
Evans has always been a force to be reckoned with at the catch point, and his ability to dominate in those situations has been a cornerstone of his success. If he stays healthy, Evans is primed to be a favorite target for Purdy, especially in the red zone, where his skills can truly shine.
The chemistry between Purdy and Evans is already showing promising signs, which bodes well for the 49ers. Evans himself is optimistic about their budding partnership.
“Love Brock,” Evans shared on Wednesday. “He’s a big reason why I came here. …
Throws a really great ball.”
Evans praised Purdy’s intelligence and work ethic, noting, “I’m getting the timing down with him now. Super smart.
He’s about his business, too. Comes to work every single day.”
Despite Purdy’s quiet demeanor, the two have connected beyond just football, discussing life and building a rapport that could translate to on-field success.
For the 49ers, this developing synergy is great news, especially considering Kyle Shanahan’s offense thrives on precision and timing routes. But it’s inside the 20-yard line where Evans might make the most noise.
The 49ers finished last season fourth in red zone scoring percentage at 65.22%. With Evans’ physicality and knack for tracking and adjusting to the ball, he could relieve some of the pressure on Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle in those crucial scoring situations.
“You’ve got to win in tight situations down there in the red zone,” Evans explained. “And I have the leaping ability, I have the awareness, and a lot of reps at doing it. I love getting in that red area and adding a different dynamic to this team.”
Evans is focused on making a difference, emphasizing, “I just pride myself on getting in the end zone, winning versus bad leverage, and one-on-one opportunities. I’ve got to get open for Brock.”
With Evans gearing up to add a new dimension to the 49ers’ offense, the prospects for this season are looking bright. If Purdy and Evans continue to gel, the 49ers could be a formidable force in the red zone and beyond.
