The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed another former member of the Green Bay Packers.
According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, the Steelers are bringing aboard Robert Tonyan on a one-year deal. The tight end caught 11 touchdowns from Aaron Rodgers during the 2020 season.
Now, Tonyan and Rodgers will get another chance to work together as the tight end joins a crowded depth chart.
Tonyan earned his spot by attending the Steelers’ rookie minicamp and impressing the coaching staff, according to Pryor.
The 6-foot-5 Tonyan turned 32 years old in April and hasn’t been as productive in his recent NFL action.
After spending his first five NFL seasons with the Packers, including surpassing 50 catches in both 2020 and 2022, he went to the Chicago Bears for 2023.
With the Bears that season, he had 11 catches.
Tonyan appeared in just five games for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 and didn’t catch a pass.
In 2025, Tonyan joined the Kansas City Chiefs and made it onto the field for all 17 games. Despite that, he finished with just one catch for one yard.
The Steelers did lose some tight end depth this offseason but still have Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth atop the depth chart. Tonyan will have a chance to compete for the TE3 role with a number of undrafted players who are currently in the building.
Given Tonyan’s past relationship with Rodgers, it certainly seems likely that he’ll have a solid chance of sticking around in Pittsburgh for this season.
