The Green Bay Packers‘ leading rusher over the past two seasons, Josh Jacobs, has been embroiled in some off-the-field issues concerning a warrant that was issued for his arrest back on May 23 for three counts of domestic abuse, an additional count of strangulation and suffocation and a further count of intimidating a victim.

Jacobs subsequently booked into jail on May 26 after turning himself, but was subsequently released the following day after the District Attorney’s office released a statement noting that they were not ready to make a final charging decision on Jacobs’ case.

However, some good news finally arose out of the situation, when head coach Matt LaFleur announced on June 2, whilst speaking to the media, that Jacobs would participate in practice on the fifth day of OTAs, and that everything was “business as usual”.

“Matt LaFleur says Josh Jacobs will practice today.” Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reported on June 2. “Says his presence hasn’t been a distraction and it’s been ‘business as usual.’”

Further media content has been released showing Jacobs to be gliding through routine RB drills with no apparent difficulty or with anything weighing on his mind.

What Does this Mean For Josh Jacobs and the RB Room?

It should not come as a huge surprise that Jacobs is back at practice, having been released from Brown County Jail last week.

For otherwise the entirety of his NFL career to date, the 28-year old has been a model figure in both the Packers’ and Raiders‘ locker rooms.

At this point in time, the Brown County DA is still not ready to pursue charges and the office has still not made it clear what their final decision will be on the matter. Jacobs is by no means out of the woods, but in this intermediate limbo period where his fate continues to hang in the balance, the player and the franchise will certainly act as if everything is completely back to normal.

Will the Packers Need to Add Another Running Back?

If Jacobs does end up being charged and ends up facing significant time away from the team in 2026 through what would most likely be a league suspension, then adding another player at the position would at the very least be a prudent move.

With last year’s backup running back Emanuel Wilson now in Seattle, the Packers’ room behind Jacobs consists of third down back Chris Brooks and former third round pick MarShawn Lloyd, whose injury problems have limited him to just one game and 6 carries over the course of his first two seasons in the league.

Green Bay are still hoping that Lloyd can be at worst a solid replacement for Wilson, but even now they are taking a big gamble that he will remain healthy throughout 2026. Now with the legal issues facing Jacobs it makes more sense than ever for the team to add another face to the unit.

The Cardinals’ Tyler Allgeier would perhaps be a name to keep an eye on throughout the offseason and training camp.
