Former San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell is getting another NFC opportunity.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced their signing of Mitchell, giving the former 49ers starter a new landing spot after an injury-filled stretch that pushed him from promising late-round find to veteran depth option. The move is not a direct blow to San Francisco’s current backfield, but it is a notable what-happened-next update for a player who once looked like one of Kyle Shanahan’s best draft steals.

Mitchell entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick by the 49ers in 2021 and quickly became more than a depth piece. He rushed for 963 yards and 5 touchdowns as a rookie, helping stabilize San Francisco’s offense during a season when the 49ers needed reliability in the run game.

The problem was never whether Mitchell could play. It was whether he could stay on the field.

Elijah Mitchell’s 49ers Run Was Productive but Short-Lived

Mitchell finished his 49ers tenure with 1,523 rushing yards, 9 rushing touchdowns and a 4.7-yard average.

Those numbers are not overwhelming on their own, but they tell only part of the story. Mitchell was productive when available, and he fit the 49ers’ outside-zone identity well enough to become a real offensive factor almost immediately.

His rookie season remains the best example. Mitchell went from Day 3 pick to the team’s most productive running back, giving San Francisco a downhill runner with enough burst to punish light boxes and keep the offense on schedule.

That version of Mitchell looked like a long-term piece.

Instead, injuries shaped the rest of his 49ers career. Mitchell dealt with multiple issues during his time in San Francisco and missed the entire 2024 season after landing on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Mitchell played in just 27 games over his first three NFL seasons before his 2024 absence.

The 49ers eventually moved forward without him, leaning on Christian McCaffrey as the centerpiece and continuing to churn depth behind him. Mitchell signed with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2025 offseason, but that stop did not turn into a significant role.

Eagles Give Elijah Mitchell a Logical Fresh Start

Philadelphia is not signing Mitchell to be a savior. That is part of what makes the move sensible.

The Eagles already have Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley and Tank Bigsby in the running back room. Mitchell is arriving as competition, insurance and a potential scheme fit rather than a guaranteed featured back.

That matters because Mitchell’s best NFL tape came in a system that rewarded timing, decisiveness and one-cut running. Bleeding Green Nation pointed to Mitchell’s familiarity with the Shanahan system as a possible asset while Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion works to install similar concepts in Philadelphia.

For Mitchell, that gives him a clearer path than simply joining a crowded backfield with no schematic connection. If he is healthy, his experience in San Francisco’s run game could help him quickly understand what Philadelphia wants from its backs.

For 49ers fans, the signing is also a reminder of how fast running back depth can change. Mitchell once looked like a major part of San Francisco’s future. Now he is fighting for staying power elsewhere before the season.

Why 49ers Fans Should Still Care

This is not a transaction that changes San Francisco’s roster. The 49ers are already several chapters removed from counting on Mitchell.

Still, Mitchell’s Eagles signing carries some fan relevance because his 49ers arc was memorable. He was one of those backs who seemed to appear out of nowhere, immediately fit the offense and briefly looked like another Shanahan success story at the position.

The Eagles are taking the low-risk version of that bet. If Mitchell is healthy, Philadelphia gets an experienced runner who has already produced in an NFL zone scheme. If injuries continue to limit him, the cost is likely minimal.

For Mitchell, the stakes are more personal. He is not trying to prove he once belonged in the league. He already did that in San Francisco. He is trying to prove there is still enough left for another real role.
