The Boston Red Sox are eagerly awaiting Roman Anthony’s return to the lineup, but they understand it’s a waiting game. The young outfielder last took to the field on May 4, when an awkward swing led to discomfort at the base of his right wrist.
Wrist injuries can be notoriously unpredictable, and after a cortisone injection last week, Anthony gave swinging a bat another try on Monday in Kansas City. Unfortunately, discomfort persisted, forcing him to step back once more.
Interim manager Chad Tracy, who knows Anthony well from their time together in Triple-A during 2024-2025, provided an update on Tuesday. Tracy emphasized Anthony’s eagerness to return, acknowledging the 22-year-old’s frustration with the situation.
“Roman’s always level-headed regardless of how things are going,” Tracy remarked. “He believes in his ability.
I think he’s probably frustrated. His mindset was, ‘I’m getting back soon.’
But that little motion with the swing still bothers it. I know he wants to be out there helping us, but he’s very, very mature… understands that he has to be healthy and you can’t hit in Major League Baseball without full strength of your hand.
So he knows that and he also knows we’ll get him right and we’ll get him back eventually.”
Before the injury, Anthony was already facing a challenging season, marking the second time this year he had to sit out multiple games consecutively. The Red Sox’s offense has been struggling, and it’s clear that Anthony was being relied upon heavily to carry the load, perhaps too soon. Nevertheless, his return is anticipated to be a game-changer for the team.
The Red Sox must ensure Anthony is not only physically ready but also that his swing has been thoroughly analyzed from a biomechanical standpoint. Developing a strategy to protect this young, talented player from frequent injuries is crucial. With Anthony’s disciplined approach and the right adjustments, the Red Sox are hopeful for a strong comeback.
