The San Francisco 49ers appear to be approaching their offensive line competition the right way — with patience and multiple options on the table. Yet even before training camp begins, a more experienced and proven solution may be available in free agency.
Veteran guard Joel Bitonio, a 34-year-old seven-time Pro Bowler who spent his entire 12-year NFL career with the Cleveland Browns, remains unsigned. While retirement remains a possibility for the respected lineman, the opportunity to chase the one prize that has eluded him — a Super Bowl ring — could be enough to bring him back for another season.
And the 49ers, a perennial contender with a clear opening on the offensive line, represent a compelling destination.
Adam Schefter didn’t guess — he leaked it. Reports linking Bitonio to San Francisco have quickly gained traction, and the potential move has already sent ripples across the league. A player of Bitonio’s caliber joining an NFC powerhouse like the 49ers would represent a significant shift in the conference balance. The NFC East, in particular, should be paying close attention.
A Proven Performer Ready for a New Chapter
Bitonio has been one of the most consistent and reliable guards in the NFL over the past decade. He earned Pro Bowl honors in seven consecutive seasons from 2018 to 2024. Even in 2025, when he did not receive the nod, his performance remained strong. According to Pro Football Focus, Bitonio committed just one penalty and allowed only two sacks across 686 pass-blocking snaps.
His football intelligence, technique, and leadership would provide an immediate boost to any offensive line. For the 49ers, who have largely sorted out their starting lineup on offense, left guard continues to stand out as a significant question mark.
Perfect Fit for San Francisco’s Needs
San Francisco is currently evaluating younger options at guard, including second-year pro Connor Colby, free-agent addition Robert Jones, and rookie Carver Willis. While internal competition is healthy and could yield long-term answers, signing Bitonio would not derail that process. Instead, it would offer the best of both worlds: an immediate, high-level starter who can anchor the position while the team continues developing its younger talent.
At worst, Bitonio’s presence would buy the 49ers valuable time to properly evaluate Colby and Willis as future building blocks. At best, he becomes a plug-and-play starter who elevates the entire offensive line and helps push the team deeper into the playoffs.
This isn’t the first time Bitonio’s name has surfaced in connection with the 49ers, underscoring that the left guard situation has yet to be fully resolved internally. Adding a veteran of his pedigree would represent a low-risk, high-reward move for a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations.
A Ring-Chasing Opportunity
For Bitonio, the move would make perfect sense. After more than a decade of strong play in Cleveland, he has never reached the Super Bowl. Joining a loaded 49ers roster that features elite talent on both sides of the ball gives him a legitimate shot at ending his career on the ultimate high.
