The Chicago White Sox previously designated former top prospect Jarred Kelenic for assignment. Kelenic, who was a top prospect with the New York Mets before getting traded to the Seattle Mariners, has not lived up to the lofty expectations that were set upon him. He has since spent time with multiple teams, and now the next chapter of his baseball career has him heading to Texas. According to Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News, Kelenic and the Texas Rangers are in agreement on a minor league contract.
Kelenic ultimately elected free agency following the White Sox’s decision. At only 26 years old, the outfielder was destined to receive some level of interest given his ceiling. Although he has yet to meet his early-career expectations, there is still a chance that Kelenic could break out at some point in the future.
With Chicago, Kelenic recorded a lackluster slash line of .226/.305/.321 across 19 games played at the MLB level. For his career in the big leagues, Kelenic has a .211/.283/.374 slash line since making his debut in 2021.
The Rangers are obviously hopeful that he can put everything together in Texas. He could certainly become a reliable MLB player if he figures things out in the big leagues.
Overall, Texas holds a 28-31 record. The ball club is tied for second place in the American League West standings, where they trail the Seattle Mariners for first place by 2.5 games as of this story’s writing.
On Monday, the Rangers will begin a three-game series in St. Louis against the Cardinals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:45 PM EST.
