The Kansas City Chiefs have been looking at ways to improve the roster ahead of the 2026 season. They have already added significant talent like running back Kenneth Walker III in free agency, but are hoping to get more talent in pursuit of another Super Bowl victory. The front office has made a decision to get some more cap space, and that opened some eyes around the league. Let’s take a closer look at what they did and what it means for the Kansas City Chiefs going forward.
The Kansas City Chiefs restructured George Karlaftis’ contract

Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs have restructured a player’s contract ahead of June 1. It was revealed that defensive end George Karlaftis’s deal was the one that was restructured, converting $9.685 million of his contract into a signing bonus. Karlaftis signed a four-year, $93 million contract extension less than one year ago.
This is something that the Kansas City Chiefs have not been afraid to do, restructuring quarterback Patrick Mahomes’s contract on an annual basis to free up some more money. The team now has about $13 million in available cap space, which has led to some speculation regarding why they did this.
While this could be to sign their NFL Draft picks, this could be a way that the Chiefs get an addition in the wide recevier room. With Rashee Rice temporarily jailed while also recovering from knee surgery, they have a need to improve at the wide receiver position. Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins, and Tyreek Hill are some of the bigger names that remain unsigned at this point. It will be intriguing to see if this is a way to get one of those skill position players on the team ahead of training camp.
