The Detroit Lions have spent the offseason searching for ways to strengthen a pass rush that remains heavily dependent on one player.

Despite another dominant campaign from Aidan Hutchinson, questions continue surrounding who can consistently generate pressure opposite Detroit’s star defender.

According to Adam Schefter, the Lions and Los Angeles Chargers have engaged in trade discussions involving veteran edge rusher Bud Dupree.

The 61-sack veteran has emerged as a potential target as Detroit looks to reinforce its defensive front before training camp.

Sources indicate conversations remain ongoing, with both teams exploring compensation that could make a deal possible.

Detroit’s interest is hardly surprising.

The Lions lost veteran pass rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad during free agency after he recorded 11 sacks last season.

Outside of Hutchinson and Muhammad, no Lions defender produced more than five sacks during the 2025 campaign.

That lack of proven production has become one of the biggest concerns on an otherwise playoff-caliber roster.

Hutchinson finished 2025 with 14.5 sacks and frequently carried Detroit’s pass rush almost entirely by himself.

The Lions believe adding another experienced edge presence could unlock even more opportunities for their defensive star.

According to reports, that player could be Bud Dupree.

Although no longer in his prime, Dupree remains one of the league’s most respected veteran pass rushers.

The former first-round pick has accumulated 61 career sacks and posted at least six sacks in five different seasons.

He also recorded six sacks as recently as the 2024 season before transitioning into a rotational role.

Last season with the Chargers, Dupree appeared in 16 games while contributing valuable depth and veteran leadership.

Los Angeles currently possesses significant depth at edge rusher, making Dupree a realistic trade candidate this summer.

For Detroit, the veteran could provide immediate insurance opposite Hutchinson while helping mentor younger players.

Rookie Derrick Moore remains highly regarded, but the Lions may hesitate to rely solely on a first-year player.

Veteran D.J. Wonnum is expected to contribute, though Detroit continues exploring additional options for the position.

A rotation featuring Hutchinson, Dupree, Wonnum, and Moore would immediately strengthen the defensive front.

The Lions believe their championship window remains open despite missing the postseason last year.

If negotiations progress, Bud Dupree could become the latest veteran addition tasked with helping Detroit return to contention.
