Kansas City, Missouri – One of the most respected names in NFL history may be about to begin a new chapter in his coaching career.
According to information confirmed by Adam Schefter of ESPN, legendary head coach Mike Tomlin is very close to joining the Kansas City Chiefs in the role of Defensive Tactical Consultant.

If the move is finalized, this will mark the first time in nearly two decades that Tomlin takes on a role outside of head coach.
Sources indicate that the Chiefs have been pursuing the idea of adding Tomlin to their coaching staff for several weeks in order to strengthen the tactical depth and experience of their defensive system.
However, one of the most important factors driving this process came from Travis Kelce himself.
Despite being a standout tight end, Kelce has remained very active behind the scenes in helping build the team. According to multiple sources, Kelce and Tomlin had a private meeting in San Antonio during the Western Conference Finals of the NBA.
Travis Kelce to Mike Tomlin: “We got a spot for you … just keep coming west.”
It was during that meeting that the Chiefs’ veteran tight end is said to have personally expressed his desire to work with the highly experienced strategist.
“We have a spot for you in Kansas City. Keep heading west. We’re building something special and we really want you to join us.”
Those sincere words are believed to have left a strong impression on Tomlin.
After 19 seasons leading the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mike Tomlin is still regarded as one of the best defensive minds in the NFL.
He possesses a remarkably consistent track record of taking the Steelers to the playoffs multiple times, winning a Super Bowl, and building a long-term winning culture.

In Kansas City, Tomlin will not replace Andy Reid as head coach. Instead, he is expected to focus on opponent analysis, defensive game planning, developing young players, and providing tactical advice to the entire defensive system.
The Chiefs’ leadership believes Tomlin’s experience can bring immediate value to a defensive unit that has plenty of young talent but still needs more stability in critical moments.
Meanwhile, Travis Kelce continues to receive high praise from within the organization for his leadership ability and commitment to the team’s future. Many Chiefs members view his proactive involvement in conversations to upgrade the coaching staff as clear proof of his growing influence in the locker room.
For Chiefs fans, the possibility of seeing an icon like Mike Tomlin at Arrowhead Stadium is an incredibly exciting prospect. If everything goes according to plan, the Chiefs will not only have one of the most respected coaching minds in the league, but also a strengthened defense ready to support their future championship ambitions.
