The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to explore aggressive roster upgrades this offseason, and one intriguing trade scenario could potentially land them one of the NBA’s premier two-way wings: OG Anunoby of the New York Knicks.

While a direct trade between the Lakers and Knicks initially seems unlikely, NBA analysts continue searching for creative ways the two franchises could align during what is shaping up to be a chaotic 2026 offseason.

Recently, Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale proposed a “lopsided” three-team trade framework involving the Lakers, Knicks, and Milwaukee Bucks that could dramatically reshape the balance of power in the Eastern and Western Conferences.

The foundation of the idea revolves around the growing speculation surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo and his long-term future in Milwaukee.

According to Favale, the Knicks remain one of the teams most frequently connected to Antetokounmpo should the two-time MVP eventually become available on the trade market. If New York aggressively pursues Giannis, players like Anunoby could become necessary trade pieces in order to satisfy Milwaukee’s demands.

That possibility is exactly where the Lakers could enter the picture.

“OG Anunoby isn’t going anywhere unless the New York Knicks luck into Giannis Antetokounmpo,” Favale wrote. “Knowing the two-time MVP showed exclusive interest in the Big Apple last summer, the Lakers should hold out hope for the chance to swoop in as a third-party facilitator who sends draft equity the Milwaukee Bucks’ way.”

Favale also noted that Los Angeles possesses enough mid-tier salary flexibility to help facilitate a larger trade without completely destroying its financial structure.

“If they play their cards right, they have enough ancillary money—Jake LaRavia, Deandre Ayton (player option), Marcus Smart (player option)—to complete a lopsided deal without nuking all of their cap space.”

For the Lakers, adding Anunoby would immediately address several major roster weaknesses.

Despite remaining competitive around LeBron James and Luka Dončić, Los Angeles still lacks elite perimeter defense, reliable wing depth, and consistent three-point shooting — all areas where Anunoby excels.
