Red Sox Eye Xavier Edwards Fix Before Deadline

The Boston Red Sox find themselves in a familiar spot as the trade deadline looms, grappling with whether to bolster their roster or offload assets. With their offense sputtering, the Sox are eyeing potential trade targets who offer value and versatility. Enter Xavier Edwards, the Miami Marlins’ second baseman who has quietly transformed into a compelling candidate for any team looking to inject life into their lineup.

Edwards is not just a flash in the pan. His journey began in 2024 with a breakout performance that saw him hit .328/.397/.423, swiping 31 bases over 303 plate appearances.

This performance established him as a formidable table-setter in the National League. He followed that up in 2025 with a .283/.343/.353 slash line, 27 stolen bases, and defensive metrics that would make any team take notice: a plus-12 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and plus-9 Outs Above Average (OAA).

His 2.5 fWAR was second on the Marlins’ roster, proving his worth beyond just the speed and contact.

Fast forward to 2026, and Edwards has added a new dimension to his game: power. His current .312 batting average, coupled with a .877 OPS, six home runs, and 19 RBIs, signals a player who’s evolved beyond just speed and average.

Statcast data highlights his growth, with a .378 Weighted On-base Average (wOBA), a notable increase in launch angle, and a hard-hit rate climbing to 33.5%. While he’s not about to lead the league in home runs, this newfound power makes him an intriguing offensive weapon.

For the Red Sox, who have struggled offensively through 55 games with a .221 average and a .683 OPS, Edwards could be the spark they need. Their lineup has been missing a contact-first, on-base machine to set the table for the power hitters.

Edwards fits this need perfectly, bringing elite contact skills, speed, and defensive prowess to second base. As a switch-hitter, he offers versatility, and his ability to draw walks and run the bases with precision could reinvigorate the Sox’s offensive engine.

Moreover, Fenway Park’s unique dimensions could play to Edwards’ strengths. The 310-foot left field wall turns well-struck balls into doubles and doubles into homers. For Edwards, who’s starting to hit with more loft and power, Fenway could be the perfect stage to showcase his evolved game.

In a season where the Red Sox need a jolt, Xavier Edwards stands out as a player who could deliver just that. With his blend of speed, contact, and newfound power, he might just be the key to unlocking Boston’s offensive potential at a crucial juncture.
