Tottenham’s Summer Priority: Why Rashford Makes More Sense Than Savinho

Now that Tottenham’s Premier League survival is confirmed, attention at the club has turned firmly to what could be a transformative summer in the transfer market.

The timing is significant. Earlier this year, former boss Ange Postecoglou candidly acknowledged on The Overlap that Spurs cannot match Europe’s financial heavyweights when it comes to wages, leaving the club chasing incremental improvers rather than genuine stars.

While Tottenham may never match the resources or pulling power of clubs like Manchester United and Manchester City, there is a growing belief that they must operate with greater intelligence and ambition in the market.

One avenue already being pursued is the free agent route. Spurs are reportedly closing in on Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, with both defenders set to become available once their deals with Liverpool and Bournemouth run out this summer.

But Tottenham are also eyeing more exciting attacking targets, with Savinho re-emerging as a genuine option.

Spurs were strongly linked with the Brazilian wide man last summer and are said to have tabled several bids in an effort to prise him away from the Etihad. He ultimately stayed and penned a new deal, but Tottenham have now reopened talks. Having struggled for regular game time in 2025/26, the 22-year-old is thought to be more receptive to a move, and Spurs may sense an opportunity to negotiate a more favourable fee.

Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig is another name being monitored. The highly-regarded teenager is attracting widespread interest across Europe, though Tottenham would face stiff competition.

Yet the most compelling option of all could be Marcus Rashford.

The England forward is widely expected to leave Manchester United for good this summer after an impressive loan stint at FC Barcelona. The Catalan club are keen to make the move permanent, though a fee has yet to be agreed, leaving the door open for other suitors. Aston Villa, Arsenal and Tottenham are all reportedly weighing up a move.

For Spurs, Rashford may represent the shrewder and more reliable choice over Savinho.

While the City winger remains a hugely exciting prospect, Tottenham can hardly afford another long-term gamble having spent consecutive seasons in the thick of a relegation fight. Savinho’s quality is not in doubt — he laid on 13 assists during 2024/25 — but his output dipped sharply last season with opportunities harder to come by. His ball-carrying ability still ranks among the best in Europe, but consistency remains a question mark.

Rashford, by contrast, would arrive as a proven commodity ready to contribute from day one. Still only 28, the forward has rebuilt his confidence after a troubled spell under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford. His time in Spain served as a reminder of the qualities that once made him one of the most feared attackers on the continent, with England teammate Anthony Gordon even hailing him as one of the finest players in the world.

Fresh from a key role in Barcelona’s La Liga title win, Rashford looks reborn — and Tottenham may well view him as the marquee signing capable of elevating their attack to a different level.

His stint at Camp Nou brought back memories of his finest days at Manchester United. Where Savinho lacked minutes and end product, Rashford delivered the opposite — 14 goals across all competitions, eight of them in La Liga, along with 14 assists.

Blessed with blistering pace and a clinical eye for goal, few players currently available can match what he offers. This is someone who has already proven himself at the highest level in English football — 297 Premier League appearances, 89 goals, and 53 assists tell their own story. Available at what looks like a bargain price, it would be hard to justify Spurs not making a serious attempt to sign him.
