Dallas Cowboys Linked to Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby as Potential Dak Prescott Successor

The Dallas Cowboys may already have their franchise quarterback locked in financially, but one NFL analyst believes the organization could still make a surprising move for the future as early as the 2026 supplemental draft.

According to NFL Draft analyst Justin Melo, Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby could emerge as a legitimate target for Dallas if he officially enters the NFL supplemental draft later this summer.

The possibility may sound unconventional at first, especially considering Dak Prescott remains under contract through 2028 after signing a massive $260 million extension. However, Melo believes Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has never been afraid to make bold or unpredictable moves when it comes to the quarterback position.

“The Dallas Cowboys are the surprise inclusion here, but never underestimate Jerry Jones’ movements,” Melo wrote. “Starting quarterback Dak Prescott is signed to a $260 million contract, but they possess an out-clause in 2028.”

That detail is important.

While Prescott remains firmly entrenched as Dallas’ starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, the Cowboys will eventually have to confront difficult long-term questions regarding the position. Prescott turns 33 years old in July, and despite individual statistical success throughout much of his career, Dallas has consistently fallen short of championship expectations during his tenure.

If the Cowboys fail to make deep playoff runs over the next several seasons, speculation about the future at quarterback will only intensify.

That is where Brendan Sorsby enters the conversation.

The Texas Tech signal-caller was widely viewed as one of the top quarterback prospects entering the 2026 college football season before becoming involved in a major NCAA eligibility controversy tied to sports gambling violations.

According to reports, Sorsby stepped away from football while addressing a gambling addiction. However, the NCAA later ruled that Sorsby violated association policy by placing bets involving Indiana Hoosiers football games during his time at the university.

At the moment, Sorsby’s eligibility status remains unresolved.

The quarterback is currently awaiting an official ruling regarding reinstatement, though there is growing belief around college football circles that he could permanently lose eligibility. If that happens, Sorsby would likely enter the NFL supplemental draft in July rather than return to the collegiate level for the 2026 season.

The NCAA released a statement emphasizing the seriousness of gambling violations involving a player’s own team.

“The Association’s sports betting rules are clear, as are the reinstatement conditions,” the NCAA stated. “When it comes to betting on one’s own team, these rules must be enforced in every case for the simple reason that the integrity of the game is at risk.”

Sorsby’s legal team has since pushed back aggressively.

In a court filing seeking an injunction against the NCAA, Sorsby’s attorneys accused the organization of unfairly targeting him while simultaneously benefiting financially from the rapidly expanding sports gambling industry.

“The NCAA has weaponized his condition to shore up a facade of competitive integrity, while simultaneously profiting from the very gambling ecosystem it polices,” the filing argued.

The legal battle remains ongoing, but the supplemental draft deadline on June 22 creates a rapidly approaching timeline for resolution.

If Sorsby officially loses eligibility, interest around the NFL is expected to be substantial.

Before the controversy emerged, the Texas Tech quarterback was projected by many analysts as a potential first-round talent in the 2027 NFL Draft. Sorsby reportedly stood to earn nearly $6 million in NIL money this season and was viewed as one of the premier quarterback prospects in college football entering the year.

That level of talent naturally creates intrigue.

For Dallas, the supplemental draft could present a rare opportunity to secure a high-upside developmental quarterback without using a premium 2026 draft selection. Under supplemental draft rules, teams must forfeit a corresponding pick in the following year’s NFL Draft if they successfully win a player bid.

In the Cowboys’ case, acquiring Sorsby would require sacrificing a 2027 draft pick.

That could complicate matters somewhat considering Dallas currently owns only five selections in the 2027 draft, including one pick each in the first, second, and third rounds, along with two sixth-round selections.

Still, franchises willing to gamble on quarterback upside often view draft capital differently.

If the Cowboys genuinely believe Sorsby possesses franchise-quarterback potential, surrendering a future draft pick could easily become justifiable. Quarterbacks remain the most valuable commodity in professional football, and organizations constantly search for succession plans long before current starters decline.

Even with Prescott still productive, Dallas would be wise to begin preparing for the future.

Prescott’s contract technically includes a more manageable exit path beginning in 2028, though even that scenario would still leave the Cowboys absorbing approximately $31 million in dead cap money with a post-June 1 designation.

Eventually, Dallas must determine whether it wants to commit yet another massive extension to Prescott deep into his 30s or pivot toward a younger option capable of resetting the franchise financially and competitively.

Drafting Sorsby would provide that alternative pathway.

From a football standpoint, Sorsby offers intriguing upside as a developmental quarterback. Scouts have praised his arm strength, mobility, field vision, and ability to create plays both inside and outside the pocket. Prior to the NCAA controversy, many evaluators believed he had legitimate NFL starter potential.

Of course, there are also undeniable risks involved.

The gambling allegations will force every NFL front office to thoroughly investigate Sorsby’s decision-making, maturity, and long-term reliability before considering an investment. Teams must determine whether his situation represents a temporary personal struggle or a more significant concern regarding professional accountability.

For Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, however, controversy has rarely prevented aggressive roster decisions.

Dallas has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to pursue talented players despite external distractions, especially when ownership believes the upside outweighs the risk. Jones has also never hidden his fascination with high-profile quarterback storylines, making the Cowboys an especially interesting speculative fit.

At this stage, no official connection between Dallas and Sorsby exists beyond analyst projection and league speculation.

But if Brendan Sorsby officially enters the supplemental draft, the Cowboys will almost certainly become one of the teams closely monitored throughout the process.

Because while Dak Prescott remains the present in Dallas, the Cowboys may already be quietly evaluating who could eventually become the future.
