The Chicago White Sox were hoping for a better tenure from the third overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.
First baseman Andrew Vaughn, now with the Milwaukee Brewers, has -0.6 bWAR with the White Sox in five seasons with the AL Central club from 2021-25.

Vaughn hit a career-high 21 home runs in 2023, but he’s never reached his peak potential. Now 28, the odds of him becoming the player the White Sox thought he would be are decreasing.
Instead of selecting Vaughn, the White Sox could have had a future All-Star and Silver Slugger who is now with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“Corbin Carroll would be the No. 1 overall pick in a lot of other redraft years, with a pair of 5-WAR seasons, a 30/30 campaign in 2025 and two top-10 finishes in NL MVP voting over the last three years,” wrote Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter.
Carroll has become a star with the D-Backs, providing both power and speed while playing above-average defense in the outfield. The left-handed hitter has led the Majors in triples the past two years.
“In this scenario, he becomes the lineup cornerstone the White Sox were expecting to get with Andrew Vaughn, and he can naturally plug into an outfield spot rather than learning to play out there on the fly like Vaughn did when JosĂ© Abreu was blocking his path,” Reuter added.

Just the other day, Carroll became the second-fastest player in MLB history to reach 50 triples and 80 home runs, doing so in 537 games.
A player like that certainly could help the White Sox as they attempt to surprise everyone and clinch a postseason berth.
