SAD NEWS: Steelers Shockingly Release 4 Veteran Players as Mike McCarthy’s Aggressive Rebuilding Plan Accelerates — The Tough Cuts That Signal Major Change in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers are making tough roster decisions as competition at every position intensifies during OTAs and ahead of training camp.

According to league sources, the Steelers have officially released four veteran players from the projected 53-man roster as the team continues to accelerate its roster rebuild and youth movement for the 2026 season.

The players released are:

Ben Skowronek (WR)

Sebastian Joseph-Day (DL)

Cole Holcomb (LB)

Jack Driscoll (OL)

These moves signal the Steelers’ aggressive push toward a younger and more athletic roster following a 2025 season that showed progress but ultimately fell short of the team’s high playoff expectations.

One of the more surprising cuts is Ben Skowronek. Despite his reliability on special teams and veteran presence, Skowronek has been squeezed out by the team’s loaded wide receiver room, which includes:

DK Metcalf

Michael Pittman Jr.

Roman Wilson

Germie Bernard

The emergence of promising rookies and young talents has forced the team to prioritize upside and speed at the position.

On the defensive line, the Steelers are parting ways with veteran Sebastian Joseph-Day. His role has become less secure after the team added multiple young defensive linemen through the draft and free agency, alongside the continued development of Cameron Heyward, Keeanu Benton, Derrick Harmon, and other emerging players.

Another significant cut on the offensive side is Jack Driscoll (Offensive Lineman). With the rapid rise of young offensive linemen like Troy Fautanu, Broderick Jones, Zach Frazier, and Mason McCormick, the Steelers have chosen to bet on youth and long-term flexibility. Driscoll was unable to secure a consistent spot in a very competitive group.

Perhaps the most notable cut is Cole Holcomb (LB). Although a respected locker room veteran and solid contributor, he no longer fits into the team’s future plans as the Steelers shift toward younger linebackers like Patrick Queen, Nick Herbig, Payton Wilson, and Carson Bruener.

These releases reflect the Steelers’ clear commitment to building a faster, younger, and more explosive team under head coach Mike Tomlin. With Aaron Rodgers leading the offense, Tomlin and his staff are focused on creating a roster capable of serious contention in 2026.
