Cardinals 1.17 ERA Arm Nears Surprise Return

The St. Louis Cardinals are poised to give their bullpen a much-needed boost, and it looks like Ryan Fernandez is the man for the job. With Matt Svanson having a tough time in the majors, fans have been clamoring for Fernandez to step up, and it seems the stars have aligned for just that.

Thanks to a rainout against the Cincinnati Reds, the Cardinals played a doubleheader on Saturday, allowing them to expand their roster. Fernandez seized the opportunity, delivering two scoreless innings and striking out four batters. Although technically sent back to the minors on Sunday, there’s a strong expectation that Fernandez will rejoin the major league roster soon, possibly as early as Monday.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted that while Fernandez was officially optioned back to Class AAA Memphis, he didn’t stray far from Cincinnati. The plan, according to sources, is for Fernandez to rejoin the team in Milwaukee for their upcoming series, filling a right-handed spot in the bullpen that opened up with Svanson’s optioning.

The Cardinals are also considering keeping Brycen Mautz on the roster for the Milwaukee series. Mautz was set to make his major league debut before a rainout postponed the game. However, Fernandez’s return seems imminent, and the simplest path would be to option Mautz back down.

At 27, Fernandez has shown promise this season with a 1.17 ERA over 7 2/3 innings in five games. His rookie season in 2024 was impressive, with a 3.51 ERA across 62 outings.

Although last year was a bit rocky with a 7.71 ERA in 32 appearances, his recent performance suggests he’s ready to make a significant impact. Keep an eye on the Cardinals’ roster moves in the coming days as they aim to strengthen their bullpen for the stretch ahead.
