BOSTON, Massachusetts – In an announcement that plunged the entire Red Sox nation into sadness, legendary broadcaster Don Orsillo officially revealed today that he is battling throat cancer. Notably, Orsillo emotionally shared that he may soon be reunited with his close friend and legendary colleague Jerry Remy.
In a tearful announcement video posted on social media, Orsillo – the familiar voice of the Red Sox for 15 years – spoke in a warm but choked voice:
“I may soon be reunited with him… Jerry Remy. I miss him so much. If I have to go, I hope to be able to sit beside him and commentate on a game together.”
This news immediately brought millions of Red Sox fans to tears. Don Orsillo, 57, is one of the most beloved broadcasters in franchise history. From 2001 to 2015, he and Jerry Remy formed a classic commentary duo, bringing countless moments of joy, sadness, humor, and emotion to fans on television.
Orsillo said the disease was discovered during a recent routine checkup. He is currently undergoing intensive treatment and is optimistic about his chances of recovery. However, having to temporarily stop his beloved work has saddened him greatly.

Jerry Remy – Orsillo’s closest friend on air – passed away in October 2021 from lung cancer. The two were icons of the Red Sox for over a decade.
