The Los Angeles Lakers could be preparing for another major roster shakeup this offseason after their disappointing playoff exit against the Oklahoma City Thunder exposed several weaknesses throughout the roster — especially at the center position.

Despite entering the postseason with championship expectations built around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, the Lakers struggled badly in the paint during their series against Oklahoma City. One of the biggest concerns came from the inconsistent production of veteran center Deandre Ayton, whose overall impact failed to meet expectations on both ends of the floor.
Now, NBA insiders believe Los Angeles may aggressively explore the trade market in search of a more reliable defensive presence at center, and one potential target continues gaining attention around league circles: Dallas Mavericks big man Daniel Gafford.
According to a proposed offseason framework discussed by ESPN, the Lakers and Mavericks could emerge as realistic trade partners in a blockbuster deal designed to address Los Angeles’ frontcourt problems immediately.
Full proposed trade:
• Lakers receive: Daniel Gafford
• Mavericks receive: Jarred Vanderbilt, Dalton Knecht, and a 2026 first-round pick
The proposed move would represent another aggressive win-now decision by the Lakers front office as the organization continues building around Luka Doncic, who remains viewed internally as the centerpiece of the franchise’s long-term future alongside breakout guard Austin Reaves.
Los Angeles has reportedly prioritized upgrading the center position ever since its failed trade attempt for Mark Williams earlier this season. After that deal collapsed, the Lakers returned to the market searching for a physical rim protector capable of rebounding, defending the paint, and finishing efficiently around the basket.
Daniel Gafford could solve several of those issues immediately.
The 6-foot-10 athletic center has developed into one of the NBA’s more underrated interior defenders over the last few seasons. Known for his shot-blocking ability, high-energy play style, and effectiveness as a pick-and-roll finisher, Gafford could provide exactly the type of interior presence Los Angeles lacked during its playoff collapse against Oklahoma City.
League executives reportedly believe Gafford would fit extremely well alongside Doncic offensively. The star guard has consistently elevated rim-running centers throughout his career thanks to his elite passing ability and pick-and-roll vision. Gafford’s vertical athleticism and lob-finishing skills could make him an ideal offensive partner inside the Lakers system.
Defensively, the potential addition becomes even more important.
The Lakers struggled protecting the rim consistently throughout the postseason, and Ayton often faced criticism for inconsistent effort, defensive positioning, and rebounding intensity. While Ayton still possesses elite physical tools and offensive talent, the organization may now prefer a more defensive-minded center capable of anchoring the paint and bringing greater toughness to the rotation.
If the trade were completed, Gafford would likely enter training camp as the favorite to become the Lakers’ starting center immediately. Meanwhile, Ayton could potentially transition into a sixth-man role off the bench — a move that might allow him to focus more on scoring and offensive production without carrying the same defensive responsibilities.
Such a role adjustment could actually benefit both the player and the team.
Ayton has shown flashes of dominant offensive ability throughout his NBA career, but consistency has remained one of the biggest concerns surrounding the former No. 1 overall pick. Moving into a second-unit role may reduce pressure while allowing him to attack opposing bench lineups more aggressively.
For Dallas, the proposed trade package could also make sense financially and strategically.
Jarred Vanderbilt would provide the Mavericks with a versatile defensive forward capable of guarding multiple positions, while Dalton Knecht remains viewed as a promising young scorer with long-term upside. The inclusion of a 2026 first-round pick would add additional future value for Dallas as the organization continues evaluating roster flexibility around its own championship timeline.
However, the biggest question surrounding the proposal remains whether the Lakers are willing to sacrifice another future first-round pick after years of aggressive win-now moves.
The franchise has repeatedly prioritized immediate contention over long-term asset preservation, especially since acquiring Luka Doncic. Adding Gafford would continue that philosophy by strengthening the roster around its current core rather than waiting for younger players to develop.
NBA analysts remain divided on whether the move would be enough to elevate the Lakers back into serious championship contention in the loaded Western Conference. Still, many agree that Los Angeles desperately needs more size, physicality, and defensive consistency if it hopes to compete with teams like Oklahoma City, Denver, and Minnesota moving forward.
Gafford may not be the biggest superstar name available this offseason, but his skill set directly addresses several of the Lakers’ most obvious weaknesses.
And after another frustrating postseason ending, Los Angeles may finally be ready to prioritize fit, toughness, and defense over star power alone.
