The Kansas City Chiefs continue to be mentioned in trade speculation surrounding Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver A.J. Brown as the team looks to bolster its receiving corps ahead of the 2026 season.
Brown, a three-time Pro Bowler who signed a three-year, $96 million contract extension with the Eagles in 2024, has become one of the most discussed names in the NFL offseason. Ongoing questions about his future in Philadelphia, combined with the Chiefs’ concerns at the wide receiver position, have fueled persistent rumors of a potential move to Kansas City.
Trade Speculation Gains Momentum
According to multiple reports, the possibility of a trade could become more realistic after June 2, when the Eagles would be able to spread Brown’s dead-cap hit over two seasons. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio noted that Philadelphia is expected to demand at least a first-round draft pick in any deal and may attempt to spark a bidding war among teams in need of proven receiving talent.
The Chiefs have repeatedly surfaced as a logical destination. Kansas City faces significant uncertainty with leading wide receiver Rashee Rice, who is currently serving a 30-day jail sentence following a probation violation that reportedly included a positive test for THC. Rice also underwent a “clean-up surgery” on his knee, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and is expected to miss at least two months, including OTAs and minicamp.
In a recent Bleacher Report analysis, NFL writer Kristopher Knox argued that the Chiefs should at least explore acquiring Brown.
“The Kansas City Chiefs should at least kick the tires on a trade, as the team lacks overall depth at the position and faces uncertainty surrounding top target Rashee Rice,” Knox wrote.
Knox highlighted how adding a player of Brown’s caliber would provide Patrick Mahomes with a reliable, high-end weapon as the team aims to return to Super Bowl contention.
Mixed Opinions Among Insiders
Not all analysts believe a deal is likely. NFL insider Albert Breer downplayed the possibility during an episode of “The Breer Report,” noting that the Chiefs had previously passed on Brown when he was available.
“I don’t think that happens,” Breer said. “They had that opportunity. They were on A.J. Brown’s list. They said no to the Eagles in the first place.”
Additional concerns surround Rice’s long-term availability. The wide receiver served a six-game suspension in 2025 for violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy and now faces potential further discipline. CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported that it remains unclear whether the league will impose another suspension, citing the NFL’s broad latitude under its personal conduct guidelines.
Rice is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and repeated off-field issues have raised questions about how much the Chiefs can realistically count on him in 2026.
Brown’s Situation in Philadelphia
Brown’s relationship with the Eagles has also drawn scrutiny. The wide receiver was absent from the start of Philadelphia’s voluntary offseason program, adding to speculation of internal tension, particularly regarding his connection with quarterback Jalen Hurts.
While no deal is imminent, the combination of Brown’s proven production, the Chiefs’ need for receiving depth, and Rice’s ongoing issues ensures that Kansas City will remain one of the teams closely monitored in any potential trade discussions.
For Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, adding a dynamic playmaker like A.J. Brown would represent a significant upgrade. Whether the front office decides to pursue such a high-stakes move remains one of the most compelling storylines of the 2026 NFL offseason.
