Detroit, MI . May 2026
The Detroit Lions may have quietly landed one of the toughest and most instinctive rookie linebackers anywhere in the 2026 NFL Draft.
As voluntary minicamp activities continue before official OTAs begin next week, several young Lions defenders have already started generating strong internal momentum throughout offseason practices.
One rookie linebacker in particular is quickly earning attention inside Detroit’s building.
According to team observers surrounding early offseason workouts, fourth-round linebacker Jimmy Rolder has already emerged as one of the most energetic and coachable defenders in Detroit’s rookie class.
The former Michigan standout recently delivered one of the most revealing comments yet about the culture shift he has experienced since arriving in Detroit.
“I was a hitter in college . raw, aggressive, instinctive. But in Detroit, it’s different. The standard here is higher, the coaching is sharper, and I’m learning how to play smarter every snap. This place doesn’t just expect greatness . it teaches you how to reach it.”
The comments reportedly generated strong reactions internally because they reflected exactly the type of mentality head coach Dan Campbell has spent years building throughout the Lions organization.
League insiders believe Detroit’s 2026 rookie class was specifically built around:
toughness
physicality
football intelligence
competitive grit
as the franchise continues pushing toward Super Bowl contention.
Rolder originally entered the NFL after Detroit selected him during the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft with the 118th overall pick.
The rookie linebacker quickly signed a four-year contract worth approximately $5.53 million shortly after being drafted.
At:
6-foot-2
238 pounds
with explosive testing numbers and excellent movement ability, Rolder immediately became viewed as one of the most intriguing developmental linebackers in Detroit’s defense.
During the NFL Combine, the linebacker posted:
a 36-inch vertical jump
and an impressive 7.00-second three-cone drill
while showcasing the sideline-to-sideline athleticism many evaluators believed perfectly matched Detroit’s defensive philosophy.
Before entering the NFL, Rolder built an impressive collegiate résumé with Michigan.
Although injuries and roster depth initially slowed his early development, the linebacker exploded during the 2025 season under defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.
Rolder finished the season leading Michigan with:
73 tackles
7 tackles for loss
2 sacks
1 interception
while earning Second-Team All-Big Ten recognition.
The linebacker also developed a reputation for elevating his play during the biggest rivalry games on Michigan’s schedule.
Rolder earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording 10 tackles against Michigan State before later posting a career-high 12 tackles versus Ohio State.
League evaluators consistently praised Rolder for:
run-defense instincts
sideline pursuit ability
secure tackling
high-effort physicality
throughout the pre-draft process.
Internally, Lions coaches reportedly believe the rookie possesses legitimate long-term starting upside at linebacker following Alex Anzalone’s departure.
Several observers also believe Rolder could immediately become a major contributor on special teams because of the aggressive “grit” mentality Dan Campbell values throughout the roster.
Meanwhile, Detroit’s broader rookie class continues generating strong optimism throughout the organization.
First-round additions, multiple defensive prospects, and several young developmental players have reportedly flashed throughout early offseason practices.
Still, few rookies have generated more quiet internal praise recently than Jimmy Rolder.
And after only one month inside the Lions organization, the young linebacker already sounds fully committed to embracing the demanding culture Detroit believes can finally bring a championship back to the city.
